SINFONIE DES FORTSCHRITTS / SYMPHONY OF PROGRESS
We live in a society committed to progress: democratic, scientific and technological progress that is supposed to bring us social justice, prosperity and a good life. It is precisely this idyllic concept of progress that Nicoleta Esinencu focuses on in her new work: The author and director shows how capitalism relentlessly creates new forms of exploitation and colonization, control and punishment, that are intensified under the conditions of the pandemic. This is reflected directly in relations between East and West and in a form of democracy in which democratic decisions are made systematically at the expense of underprivileged sections of the population.
[Symphony of Progress] is about the complicated relations between East and West and about what we call modern slavery. Nicoleta Esinencu im Interview mit SEEstage
What it is to have these jobs in Western Europe, in agriculture or in slaughter houses, in Amazon delivery, in construction. All these jobs are paid below minimum salary, the employers do not respect the laws about working conditions, on spargel fields they even take the passports of the workers. These people live in unbelievable conditions, 10 people in one container, without access to anything. Nicoleta Esinencu im Interview mit SEEstage
During my residency here, I could see the problems more sharply. During the pandemic I was [stuck] here. At the same time there were people traveling from Eastern Europe to Germany because German companies were sending charter flights to Romania and other Eastern European countries to have workers to pick the spargel and strawberries.
