as part of NOW REALLY?

07.12. – 09.12.2023

The FFT nourishes longstanding connections to artists in Düsseldorf, in Germany, and throughout the world. But how does a new work enter the repertoire? The west off and Freischwimmen programmes play an important part in this. west off lends support to new groups from North Rhine-Westphalia just starting out on the independent scene. The network provided by Freischwimmen works in a very similar way – on an international level, and it has been doing that for the past 20 years.

Book presentation Talks & Workshops

Freischwimmen has been advocating for the development and support of artistic signatures and the work biographies of up-and-coming artists on both the national as well as the international qualification levels. As a grown network of production houses in the German-speaking countries (currently: SOPHIENSÆLE Berlin, Schwankhalle Bremen, HochX Munich, LOFFT–DAS THEATER Leipzig, FFT Düsseldorf, Theater Rampe Stuttgart, Gessnerallee Zurich, and Brut Vienna), it offers a multi-year backing to young artistic talent, opening space for artistic blooming, building trust, creating sustainable production structures, and enabling international visibility.

Yet, the network was not selected for a further support for 2024 – 2025 through the support programme “Verbindungen fördern (Fostering Connections)” programme by Bundesverband Freie Darstellende Künste e.V. (BFDK) (Federal Association for the Independent Performing Arts). Therefore, the combined production platform of eight German, Austrian, and Swiss theatres now faces its looming end. On the occasion of the anniversary coming up next year, and with a fighting spirit for the network’s continued existence, the publication 20 Jahre Freischwimmen (20 Years of Freischwimmen) will be presented.
