Raqs is a classical dance from the Arabian world. In Germany, it is, most commonly, called belly dance or oriental dance, which carries a lot of clichés. Choreographer Tümay Kılınçel presents a new Raqs interpretation: The dancers on stage blast stereotypical notions apart. Her cumulative body knowledge on dance styles such as Fusion, voguing, baladi, and contemporary music meets the sounds of a live band and those from a DJ’s desk. Thus, together, they purge belly dancing from its orientalist and colonial ascriptions, instead celebrating it as a feminist practice of self-empowerment.
