In WAIT TO BE SEATED, two feminist collectives from Bangalore and Berlin meet to examine the laws of hospitality. Diplomatic state visit regulation protocol, its adherence and violations, serves as the template. During the exchange, the roles of hosts and guests are constantly redistributed. Hospitality thus becomes a challenge, a promise, a burden. “Atithi Devobhava”, “the guest is akin to a god”, is a widespread dictum in India. There is no comparable proverb in Germany. What consequences does this bear for a German-Indian encounter?
WAIT TO BE SEATED sketches out a hospitality parkours with a dining table, red carpentry and a dance floor, in the middle of an enchanted nowhere. Both groups approach each other from opposing sides, meeting in the middle, opening a new horizon.
The piece premiered in Bangalore in December of 2025. This will now be followed by a German and European tour.
