kainkollektiv has explored the historical and mythical origins of European theatre in ancient Greece through extensive research travels to Athens and the Peloponnese peninsula. Tracing the “art of assembly”, the artists came upon the ancient women’s Thesmophoria theatre festival. In honour of the goddesses Demeter and Persephone, a three-day festival was held each autumn for three days and three nights.
Under the title THESMOPHORIA. THE NEW ANCIENT THEATRE, kainkollektiv and an ensemble of international artists issue an invitation to reinvent the ancient art of care and assembly with all those gathered. Their post-antiquity theatre festival is a 30-hour durational performance which allows for the sharing, learning and trying of lost gestures and rituals. They are designed to allow an imagining and testing of visions for a good community, and to celebrate together.
In performances, dance, music, film, ritual, and communal workshops – the so-called care schools –, those visions come to life. The audience is not only invited to watch and listen but rather to participate actively, to experience, and to stay. If one wishes, it is possible to spend the entire 30 hours at the theatre, sharing time and space, to eat, even to sleep at the theatre or to come (or return) to the shared breakfast and the morning yoga session.
