Stefan Schneider (TAL) / Ored Recordings
Konzert Music & Sound Social/Urban Movements
Düsseldorf-based label TAL and North Caucasian Ored Recordings are preparing a joint release featuring field recordings of traditional music as well as a live performance that reinterprets the boundaries between Circassian melodies and abstract electronics.
Ored Recordings is a label from Nalchik that studies, documents, publishes, and promotes traditional and local music of the North Caucasus. Instead of strictly archiving and preparing an impartial presentation of ethnic and cultural diversity, Ored Recordings prefers to focus on the context in which traditional music exists today. Along with this, not only artistic questions arise, but also issues of a social and political nature.
The collaborative release with Düsseldorf-based label TAL is more than a compilation of music unfamiliar to the European listener; it is rather an authorial collage by Stefan Schneider, offering an unexpected perspective on Ored’s living archive.
At the presentation of the vinyl and CD release, Ored Recordings co-founder Bulat Khalilov will speak about the current state of independent music in the North Caucasus, the influence of traditional music, and the colonial traumas of the region.
The evening will continue with a performance by the trio of Timur Kodzoko – Stefan Schneider – Martina Bertoni.
This is a combination of Circassian ritual and dance tunes with textural electronics and rhythmic structures. The music of this international trio reconsiders familiar roles in the interaction between different approaches, cultures, and traditions. Instead of the usual scheme of “folk + electronics” or “tradition + modernity,” the musicians propose an equal dialogue among all participants in which it is difficult to clearly divide elements into categories. And despite the abstract nature of the sound, the project raises questions that lie beyond aesthetics and sound itself.

The ORED Recordings label was founded in 2013 by Circassian friends and fellow musicians Bulat Khalilov and Timur Kodzoko, in order to start an activity which was and is dedicated to documenting and preserving the traditional and post-traditional music of the North Caucasus. Khalilov and Kodzoko were simply excited about this music as it sounded like a force that transcends borders and in which time dissolves and community becomes the only compass. Through hundreds of field recordings made at communal gatherings, local festivities, or family meetings, the label has captured a wide range of individual voices and their unique acoustic manifestations. All recordings on this album capture the raw expressiveness of the mountainside villages. Music performances being played by people who dedicate their love to music and an additional willingness to share intimate emotions.
