Pulse Lab: A Peak over the Shoulder

Sound meets dance – Cooperativa Maura Morales exemplifies a very close correlation between movement and sound, dance and music, like barely any other company. In all their works, this tight communication between choreography and music as equal dialogue partners and actors of the performance becomes palpable, visible, and audible.
Some years ago, from the company’s characteristic mode of operation sprang the initiative for their creative format Pulse Lab. In it, Cooperativa Maura Morales invites three artists each from the fields of music/composition/sound as well as three artists from the areas of choreography/dance/performance to participate in a three-day creative clash at the intersection of music and movement.
Three times three – the participants form three randomly assembled Pulse teams that develop a collaborative effort each over the course of three days. To grasp the artistic language, the artistic vision of the partners in such a short period of time, and to convey them – this is the Pulse Lab creative challenge. A jointly developed composition and choreography will be presented as a “peak over the shoulder” before an audience at the close.

Participants
Joel Jaffe is a composer and music producer with focus on electronic music for performance, theater and film. Jaffe´s work explores the facets of representational and abstract storytelling with the medium of sound.
Luiza Braz Batista is a Brazilian choreographer, performer, curator, producer, and director based between Germany and Brazil. Alongside her choreographic work, she is rehearsal director for the Pina Bausch Foundation and Head of Production of the Movement Art International Dance Festival in Trier/Luxembourg. Her work explores themes of identity, memory, and ancestry.
Pamela Soria is a Mexican composer and pianist. Her work brings together diverse musical worlds—ranging from instrumental music to electronic and audiovisual formats. In doing so, she explores sound as a medium for perception, interaction, and transformation.
Born in Bari, Italy, Valeria Di Mauro completed her dance training in New York City. She later returned to Europe, where she worked in Spain, Italy, and Germany. Her practice is driven by a deep curiosity about movement as a way to connect with the body, sensation, and human experience.
Lucas Lopes Pereira ist ein brasilianischer indigener Künstler, der zwischen Deutschland und Brasilien arbeitet. Er hat mit dem Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch und Ultima Vez | Wim Vandekeybus zusammengearbeitet. In seiner künstlerischen Praxis erforscht er den Körper als Ort der Erinnerung, Identität und Transformation und setzt sich dabei mit körperlicher Intensität, Abstammung und verkörpertem Wissen auseinander.
Frauke Berg ist eine in Düsseldorf lebende Klangkünstlerin und Komponistin, die an der Schnittstelle von experimenteller Musik, Film und Installation arbeitet. Neben ihrer eigenen künstlerischen Praxis schafft sie Auftragswerke für Experimentalfilme und Installationen. Sie tritt regelmäßig mit dem Noise-Ensemble Ferment auf und entwickelt gleichzeitig eigenständige Soloprojekte.
