About the Physical Theatre Network

The Physical Theatre Network (PTN) is a non-profit association of professional physical theatre artists and companies. The network was founded in 2017 by graduates of the Physical Theatre course at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen with the aim of strengthening the cohesion, self-efficacy, and visibility of physical theatre artists. An important function of the network is to promote exchange and networking among artists, and to facilitate access to independent artistic work for young artists.

Physical theatre has become an integral part of the independent performing arts in the Ruhr area and throughout the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and infuses the scene with moving, sensual and political productions, events, and festivals.

It is a multidisciplinary and international form of theatre that exploits the narrative power of body, space, object, and movement. Many physical theatre creators are also authors, directors, choreographers and performers of their own plays. In the companies, work is often done collectively and in flat hierarchies. Forms of physical theatre may fuse elements of mask play, pantomime, clowning, puppetry and object theatre, dance, acrobatics, performance art, or spoken theatre.
