The Lizard’s Traces

*Ulrike Haß*was born in Berlin and studied German Philology, Politics and Psychology at the Free University Berlin. She subsequently worked as a publishing editor, author, and dramaturge, while questions of dramaturgy and theatre steadily gained more weight with her. As a board member of the Dramaturgische Gesellschaft (Dramaturgical Association) from 1986 until 1990, she organised many events on the positions of German-language and European dramaturgy, together with Theresia Birkenhauer from the FU Department of Theatre Sciences. She simultaneously worked on her dissertation and graduated with her thesis “Militante Pastorale. Antimoderne Bewegungen im frühen 20. Jahrhundert” (“Militant Pastoralism. Anti-Modern Movements during the early 20th Century”). Following a year as a post-doctorate at the graduate college “Theater als Paradigma der Moderne” (“Theatre as Paradigm of the Modern Era”) at Mainz’s Johannes Gutenberg University, she went to FU Berlin as an academic assistant for Theatre Sciences. She then went to Ruhr University Bochum in 1999, at first deputising before receiving her own position, to then being tenured as a university professor for Theatre Sciences at Ruhr University Bochum following her postdoctoral qualification with a theatre and cultural history thesis (“Bühnenform und Wahrnehmung”) (“Stage Form and Perception”) at FU Berlin in February of 2000.In Bochum, building the young institute took precedence. Together with Guido Hiß, she developed numerous collaborations, ensured a continuously growing network for both the institute as well as its students with the North Rhine-Westphalian theatre scene, founded an annual publication of the institute for Theatre in the Ruhr Area (Theater über Tage, 2007-2012, Schauplatz Ruhr) and prepared the implementation of a master’s degree “Szenische Forschung” (“Scenic Research”), established in 2012, that has been educating, under the guidance of Sven Lindholm, students in the field between art and sciences.
