The independent performing arts have been, and still are, especially affected by crisis situations. To support the artists, Fonds Darstellende Künste initiated and supported around 25 laboratories between May and August 2022 – ranging in scope from object theatre to musical theatre, from dance and performance and plays to theatre in public spaces and contemporary circus. The film documents the artistic work and exploration of those (at times also digital) laboratories in times of societal transformation.
The big screen presents positions by Danny Banany, Mable Preach, Mieke Matzke, Simone Dede Ayivi, Stefan Kaegi, and Susanne Schuster, among others. Numerous curators and artistic directions from different production venues and festivals raise their voices. Dennoch! – Zur Lage der Freien Künste shows the polyphony of aesthetics, practices, and spaces, merging them into one shared common language.
On the occasion of the film presentation, we would like to engage in a conversation on the situation of the independent performing arts in Düsseldorf and throughout the wider region.
