The Modern Girl
A musical tale about German and Polish women during the Interwar period
Concert Music & Sound Social/Urban Movements
Women in both Poland and Germany experience profound changes between the two World Wars: They gain suffrage, win professional liberties, and a new sense of self emerges. It is astonishing to realise how similar women’s history was on both sides of the border.
On stage and on film, women were depicted as self-determined, strong and sensual for the first time – not only standing in a male’s shadow. A century later, Das moderne Mädel invites us to rediscover this revolutionary era: Where do we stand today? What remained – and what was lost?
Marta Wryk, internationally celebrated mezzo-soprano, lets us hear the memorable tunes of that epoch in a fantastic way, accompanied by pianist and composer Tomasz Prasqual. Actress Margaux Kier tells stories about emancipation and upheaval. The project was developed in collaboration with bestselling author Anna Kowalczyk. An evening bursting with history, music, and startling parallels with our times.
An event of the Polish Institute Düsseldorf as part of Polish Freedom Weekend.
