Crafting Puppetry Films

This intense eight-hour workshop invites the participants into the practical world of puppetry films. From the analysis of the puppetry seen on screen to the exploration of the visual style and modes of narration, the participants gain fundamental skills necessary for the production of their own puppetry short films. Through a combination of lectures, practical camera practice and joint production, a 30 second to one minute puppet film will be produced, filmed as a group. Perfect for artists, educators and curious creatives of every age!
Through this workshop, the students will:
• Understand the most important aspects of puppetry in front of a camera.
• Get to know the fundamental concepts such as image structure, lighting and composition.
• Receive an introduction to production planning.
• Shoot a short puppet movie together (and, if possible, also edit it).

Alex U. Griffin (USA) is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker, photographer, and puppeteer. Holding a master’s degree in film production from Chapman University, he has created imagery and content for brands such as Disney/ABC, Universal Music Group and Dreamworks while also producing Heather Henson’s “Handmade Puppet Dreams” series.
Alex has also served as the President of the Puppeteers of America and produces, curates and hosts the biannual “Reel Puppetry Film Festival” as well as the popular annual “48hr Puppet Film Project”.
