Blickwechsel (A Change of Perspective)

Culture is one of the main targets of extreme right powers. The ideological campaign against the arts has become more and more open during the past few years, demarcation between friend and foe re-introduced: A local family theatre receives no further funding after attending a demonstration against right-wing extremism. Someone crosses out the contemporary analogies as a youth theatre group prepares a piece on the Third Reich. A queer-feminist collective receives violent threats in social media. All this and more happened within the last few months. With Blickwechsel, director Janina Möbius examines this development in dialogue with Rimini Protokoll, CHICKS*, Katharina Warda, Julia Wissert, and many more personalities from the arts, culture, and sciences.

Insights into performances and pieces from the breadth of the performing arts not only show how they counteract this accelerating polarisation. When the citizen’s jury in the Harz discusses and selects the queer-feminist piece, the racist attack of 2020 becomes redrawn as an accusatory performance at the Hanau Rathaus, as children talk about stereotypes and class differences in front of East-Berlin theatre doors, then one can surely see how the performing arts invite reflection and rethinking together on a daily basis – thereby empowering democracy in the long run.
