It is a double-feature film and lecture evening: The Plastic Bag Store by Robin Frohardt is a celebrated puppetry film artwork, created from an immersive theatre project between rubbish, magic, and everyday fantasy. Following the film’s presentation, puppeteer Jamie Shannon will give a lecture about his puppetry work in film and TV spanning three decades. Afterwards, the audience will be invited to ask questions.
Film: The Plastic Bag Store by Robin Frohardt
The Plastic Bag Store is a large-scale immersive puppetry theatre project that connects film and installation, theatre and puppetry. It premiered on Times Square in 2020 and has been touring since, presenting in Los Angeles, Chicago, Adelaide, Austin as well as throughout Australia. The live performance was later captured on film and transformed into a magnificent piece of puppetry film art we are happy to show here.

For more than 30 years, puppeteer and filmmaker Jamie Shannon has been severely but involuntarily frightening children watching TV. In this excruciatingly funny live show, the creator of “Nanalan”, “Mr. Meaty” and a whole slew of utterly questionable creatures tells the strange stories behind some of the most disturbing puppets ever to populate TV screens.

Robin Frohardt (USA) is an award-winning theatre and movie director, recognised for her expressive aesthetics and detailed constructions. In her narrative films, puppetry works and sculptures, she utilises familiar materials, oftentimes rubbish, to shape detailed worlds that lend magic to everyday occurrences, highlighting the banalities of life. She received a Guggenheim Stipend for her theatre work, a Creative Capital Award, multiple Jim Henson Foundation Stipends as well as the Herb Alpert Prize.
Jamie Shannon (CAN) is an author, director and puppeteer with more than 30 years of experience in producing puppet series and specials. He devised and developed numerous shows and characters for Disney (Ooh, Ahh and you), The Henson Company (Labyrinth: Live, The Legend of Rasputin), Nickelodeon (Mr Meaty), PBS (Nanalan), as well as for the BBC (Big and Small), apart from works with Sia, Spike Jonze, and Apple, for other cool projects.
