ROTTERDAM PRESENTA & CONTACT GONZO

Accident Excercises

Performance Social/Urban Movements Theatre & Performance

Rotterdam Presenta develop exercises in which they probe the accident. They observe collisions, falls, and missteps. Together with performance art group Contact Gonzo (Osaka), they set up a laboratory for risk culture wherein they reflect upon the accident as a moment of deformation and destabilisation, on the qualities of non-autonomous bodies and on the power of sudden happenings. In four accident exercises, human bodies, fruit, and motor vehicles collide and are subjected to meticulous observation.

Contact Gonzo is a collective from Osaka, Japan, established in 2005, that combines improvisational physical contact with legendary journalist Hunter S. Thompson’s (1937–2005) “gonzo” aesthetics. They work in public sites, mountains, rivers, galleries, museums, theatres, and alleys around the world, with performances that may seem like either a street mosh or a sophisticated dance. In recent years, Contact Gonzo has become the focus of increasing attention in both the performing arts and contemporary art scenes. Contact Gonzo currently consists of four members with different backgrounds, including NAZE, Takuya Matsumi, Keigo Mikajiri, and Yuya Tsukahara.
